My daughter wrote this to our 14 year old “puppy” after we had to put him to sleep.  It is really hard when you know it is the best thing for them, yet they look so happy.  Sammy was a very happy member of the family, he just got to the point that he could not stand or walk on his own.  He was mortified when he had to go to the bathroom where he was sitting.  That was the time we knew we didn’t have a choice.  I miss him so.  Here is what she wrote…..

My Puppy 

After 14 years I had to say goodbye to you. I love you and miss you soo much. This house will never be the same without you. I already miss coming home and seeing you get so excited and wagging your tail and barking. When ever anyone would come over you would get sooo excited and jump and all over them and knock ‘em down because you never realized how big and how strong you were. You would get a little too excited and pee a bit. Sam, you were the best dog anyone could ever ask for. You loved Bryan and me just as much as we loved you. You didn’t do anything without us. You always played basketball with us, popped a few balls, and always try to steal it away from us when we would dribble. Same with baseball except we would never get the ball back… you’d stop the grounder and the game was over. And with sledding we would go down the hill and you would run off with our sled and tear it up. If we were gone too long you would come looking for us whether it would be finding us at the pool and standing outside barking until we came out or just coming to the front door of the neighbors and barking. I used to paint your nails and you would pick the color, didn’t like it much but still let me do it. You really loved it when I got the toothbrush out to brush your teeth.I know you were in so much pain, yet you never really showed it you just didn’t want to be alone. I hated holding you in my arms and watching the vet sedate you but I do know you’re not hurting anymore. I remember the day we brought you home, never imagining this day. I’m sooo sorry we had to do it; I really wish you could’ve and would’ve just gone on your own. We all miss and love you soo much!  I love you Sammy.
